New Book about Obama, Hawaii

In what’s being described as a detailed biography of Barack Obama’s early years, a new book, "Barack Obama: The Story" will be released this month. Advance excerpts tell about his life as an easy going Hawaiian miscreant, busy hanging out with his pals and smoking marijuana.

At the time, Obama went by the nickname Barry. This was before he switched to using his more exotic-sounding real first name. It also talks about Barry being the leader of the "Choom" gang. Choom was the equivalent of stoner, and the principle practice was smoking weed, or chooming.

According to some, our current president went through a phase where he was a virtual pothead; although some of the tales are a bit odd. For example, the practice of total absorption, where someone’s turn to smoke a joint was skipped if they weren’t able to hold the previous puff in long enough.

Other tidbits: Roof hits – sealing all the windows in a car so that none of the marijuana smoke escaped. Intercepting – moving into a line as a joint was being passed to get a hit out of turn. "When a joint was making the rounds, he often elbowed his way in, out of turn, shouting, 'Intercepted!' and took an extra hit."

The book is expected to give an interesting portrayal of growing up black in Hawaii in the late 1970’s.

This adds to a picture Obama painted himself in his book, “Dreams of My Father,” which includes a comment on marijuana use: "I blew a few smoke rings, remembering those years. Pot had helped…It didn't make any difference whether you smoked reefer in a white classmates's sparkling new van or in the dorm room of some brother you'd met at the gym or on the beach with a couple of Hawaiian kids. Everyone was welcome into the club of disaffection."
